noun (plural: duplexes)

A building that contains two dwelling units.

The dwelling units may be side-by-side or stacked vertically.

Note: in some areas, municipal by-laws may define the wordduplexmore strictly. For example, in Toronto the wordduplexonly refers to two dwelling units stacked vertically.
