A complete and separate living space within a building.

The phrasedwelling unitrefers only to a living space, not to the type of ownership or type of construction.

Each dwelling unit must be separated by walls from any other dwelling units in the same building, and must have a separate, lockable entrance. (Several entrances may open into a shared hallway or lobby.)

A dwelling unit might be found within a detached house, semi-detached house, attached house, or apartment building.

A dwelling unit might be a freehold, rented, part of a condominium complex, or part of a co-operative.
