permit (building permit)

noun

A document issued by a municipal authority to certify blueprints and authorize the start of work on a project.

Permits help to ensure that new projects are not built in inappropriate locations, such as building a pool or garage that infringes on a neighbour's lot.

Permits also help to ensure that projects meet minimum safety and construction standards, and abide by local zoning by-laws.

Different types of permits are issued depending on the type of work being done, for example, construction, plumbing, heating and cooling work, or electrical work.
