Pre-Winter Maintenance

With autumn approaching, some early check-ups should be made:

Prepare your furnace for winter by verifying that the pilot light is on (if applicable), exchanging the filter, checking the condition of the fan belt, and oiling the motor (if appropriate for your model). Check that your humidifier is working and shut off your air conditioner. Check weatherstripping on all outside doors and windows for damage. If you have a fireplace, check the chimney for obstructions such as bird nests. Clean eaves troughs and make sure the ground around each downspout is graded away from the house for at least 4-6 feet.
