Checking for Winter Damage

Posted April 15th, 2008 under renovations and repairs.

After the heavy winter it is a good idea to walk around the house and check the lower walls and foundation for any ice damage or freezing damage such as split bricks or siding that has been lifted away. Check for low spots around the foundation and fill them in to ensure a proper water run-off.

Also note whether any of the eaves trough fasteners have been pried away from the fascia by the snow and ice. This needs immediate attention because the flow of water towards the down spouts may be affected.

Climb a ladder to sight along the line of the eaves trough and you will see if there is any gap between the eaves trough and the fascia or any droop in the direction of water flow towards the down spout.
