Prolonging Shingle Life

Posted January 26th, 2016 under renovations and repairs.

A new product from Techniseal, called Roofkeeper, caught my eye recently. It promises to extend the life of your shingles for up to ten years, at only a fraction of the cost of new shingles.

It's a sealant that can be applied with either a roller or a spray gun, and is available either coloured or clear. (If your shingles show a bit of wear, it's beneficial to cover them with the coloured product, but if they look good you can use a clear coat to keep the original colour and texture of the roof.)

Roofkeeper is best applied in spring or fall, to avoid the hot days of summer. It's not a substitute for repairing damaged shingles, so make sure your roof is in good condition before applying.

Roofkeeper costs about $600.00 per 1000 square feet of shingles, and is carried at Rona. You can apply it yourself, or have it applied by a professional. I'll be trying a coat on my garage this spring to see how it performs.

Want to know more about roof maintenance? Just ask me, I'll be happy to help.
