When to Replace Windows
Posted June 15th, 2006 under renovations and repairs, money matters.
What are the deciding factors for whether to replace old windows? Apart from aesthetics, any of the following may indicate that a window should be replaced:
- structural damage (e.g. rotten frame, broken glass)
- poor seal between the window and the frame (this can occur even with double or thermal glazing!)
- single glazing (only one layer of glass)
When deciding what type of windows to buy, consider how quickly the cost of the windows may be recovered through reduced heating bills. This can depend on the size, number, and position of the windows, as well as the typing of heating. An expert can help you perform an accurate calculation.
To gauge the insulating ability of a window, check its effective R-value (a higher value is better).
